A joint team from the University Medical City, represented by the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and the Department of Surgical Oncology at the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre, has successfully performed the first surgery of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman involving lymphaticovenous anastomosis following lymph node dissection for cancer.
The procedure is considered a highly advanced supermicrosurgical technique, involving the connection of extremely small lymphatic vessels measuring less than 0.5 millimeters in diameter to nearby veins. The approach aims to improve lymphatic drainage after lymph node removal, thereby reducing the risk of lymphedema and its associated symptoms, enhancing patients’ quality of life, and minimizing long-term complications.
The medical team emphasized that the successful performance of this advanced procedure within the Sultanate of Oman reflects the high level of national medical expertise and demonstrates the strong integration and collaboration among specialized medical teams within the University Medical City.
The achievement also marks an important step toward developing a comprehensive national program in this field, further strengthening access to highly specialized and precision healthcare services within the Sultanate of Oman.
