The ear surgery team at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, part of the University Medical City, has successfully performed the first surgical procedure to treat a disease using the endolymphatic sac closure technique in the ear, in a step that reflects the development of national capabilities in providing specialized healthcare. This achievement is the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman.
The procedure was carried out under the leadership of Dr. Nasser bin Mohammed Al Tamimi, Consultant Surgeon at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, within an integrated healthcare system that combines highly specialized expertise with advanced medical equipment. This intervention represents a qualitative shift in providing advanced treatment options for cases that do not respond to conventional therapies, contributing to improving patients’ quality of life and reducing the need for treatment abroad.
Ménière’s disease is known as a disorder affecting the inner ear, characterized by recurrent episodes of vertigo, hearing loss accompanied by tinnitus, and a feeling of pressure inside the ear. In advanced cases, it may lead to gradual or complete hearing loss.
This achievement embodies a firmly established institutional direction toward enhancing the quality of specialized healthcare services and strengthening the integration of care between accurate diagnosis and advanced therapeutic intervention. It also supports an educational and research environment that contributes to developing national competencies and transferring modern medical knowledge.
This achievement reflects the ability to absorb and apply the latest medical technologies in precise fields, enhancing the efficiency of the healthcare system and consolidating the Sultanate of Oman’s position as an advanced center for providing specialized healthcare. This success comes as an extension of University Medical City’s efforts to develop an integrated model of healthcare that combines clinical excellence, the building of national capabilities, and support for medical innovation, achieving a sustainable impact on community health and the quality of services provided.
