Change in the Family System: a non-sociological reading at Sultan Qaboos University

Muscat,(ONA) - The College of Arts and Social Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University held a lecture entitled “Change in the family system, non-sociological reading” within the cultural season organized by the university presented by Dr. Tariq bin Saqr Al Nuaimi, Professor of Sociology at Sultan Qaboos University.

The lecture was moderated by Dr. Amjad bin Hassan Al-Hajj, Assistant Dean for Training and Community Service, College of Arts and Social Sciences.

The lecture dealt with several aspects related to the formation of the family, the contemporary challenges it faces and its form that has begun to transform, in addition to the negative aspects that threaten the survival and continuation of the family in its classic form with specific roles of mother and father. Dr. Tariq Al-Nuaimi explained that there are three things that threaten the survival of the family and its continuation in its classic state and try to destroy and tamper with it, and make the individual demanding of individual life outside the family and outside marriage.

The first is the feminist movement, which means the movement cantered around women, which makes women deviate from their roles in the family, and calls for hatred of males and reluctance to marry. This puts society in a constant struggle between males and females, which leads to the reluctance of both parties to marry, comparing the movement cantered around women and the movement for the liberation of women, which he called the right and just movement, unlike the first.

Second, the social sciences revolution, and here Dr. Tariq used the term liquid monotheism, and this idea, as the doctor sees it, removes reference, basis and belief in them from all constants and values, and makes them variable and not fixed values, and makes faith and public morals relative and not absolute issues. This is one of the dilemmas experienced by modern families, as explained by Dr. Tariq.

Third, the economic market revolution, which is the existing global system, which Al-Nuaimi described as the main reason behind the indebtedness of countries, the high rates of poverty and the search for work and mong the most important reasons that destroy the family and reduce its role and the role of society.

At the end of the lecture, Dr. Tariq Al-Nuaimi said, “Today's societies are experiencing very large, unprecedented changes, especially at the level of values and the family system, not to mention the change at the level of social relations. These changes never portend the direction of social and cultural stability that human societies seek. Therefore, attention must be paid to many global variables that may lead to regressive effects on Arab societies and developing societies in general.”

On his part, Dr. Saeed Al-Siyabi, Head of the Cultural Season, speaking about the season and its upcoming activities, said, “This lecture is a continuation of the cultural season, and it is the second lecture of the season. The cultural season varies with many hosting, seminars, lectures and readings of new books issued by academics in the College of Arts and Social Sciences.”
