Muscat, (ONA) - The Omani Society for Writers and Literates represented by the Committee of Studies and Thought held the “Wednesday Salon” event, titled “Citizenship in Times of Transformations and Crises”, presented by Dr. Saif Al-Mamari, on Zoom, along with live broadcast on its channels on YouTube and Twitter.
The lecture involved many topics, including a vision about the emergence and understanding of citizenship and the reasons for questioning citizenship in times of challenges and crises, passing through crises and transformations affecting the values of citizenship in Oman recently and the most growing and shrinking values. It also clarified the role of the citizens and their motives for participating or reluctance to participate in times of crises and transformations, in addition to the topic of digital citizenship and its relationship to the citizen's role in times of transformations and crises. Al-Maamari spoke in his lecture, managed by Mubarak Al-Hamdani, about a stage in which the world is witnessing profound transformations, exacerbated by the corona virus pandemic, presenting an approach between citizenship, the most prominent form of human social movement throughout history and the crises and transformations that are already a changing influence.
Through this approach, Al-Maamari, associate professor at Sultan Qaboos University and a visitor to the Scottish University of Glasgow, tried to read the principles of citizenship, its nature, trends in its interpretation and construction, in addition to its effects and its impact on crises and transformations. He stressed that true and solid citizenship is a tool for resisting and facing crises, as it represents great opportunities for giving, reviewing and evaluating the roles of institutions and the effectiveness of citizens, who are both parties to the citizenship process. He explained that this review is to breathe life and move the national mobilization towards more positive action on the national scene, so as to achieve the public good, and enhance the initiative that strengthens the national body, which was and still is if a member complained, the rest of the members called for opinion, assistance and constructive engagement. The lecture provided multiple visions of how to benefit from crises in promoting citizenship by the state and its institutions, and by citizens, in order to transform crises into opportunities for building, development and prosperity for all.
