London, June 21 (ONA) - Arsenal manager Michael Arteta described the way his club lost the match “unacceptable” after receiving two goals near the end and stumbling 1-2 in front of Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League yesterday.
It seemed that Arsenal would achieve victory after advancing with a wonderful goal by Nicolas Pépé, but Lewis Dunk equalized for the hosts before his teammate Neal Maupay scored the victory goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The second defeat in a row after the League resumed, following a three-month hiatus due to the coronavirus, left Arsenal in 10th place with 40 points from 30 games, six points behind Manchester United, the fifth.
“It is unacceptable the way we lost the match. We love the competition and I know we have a young squad, but despite that we lost the match and things had to be decided early.” Before the league's long pause, Arsenal won three consecutive league games and revived hopes of qualifying for Europe next season.
However, after the defeat from Manchester City on Wednesday and now from Brighton, Arsenal’s qualification has become a distant dream.
“We need to try to give a boost to the players. There are a lot of things that we did wonderfully, but we do not compete at this level and such goals should not be allowed,” Arteta said.
Arsenal suffered another blow with the injury of basic goalkeeper Bernd Leno who was injured before the end of the first half.
The victory gave a boost to 15th-ranked Brighton, who moved up five points from Bournemouth, who was seated at the start of the relegation zone.
