Frankfurt, (ONA) - Former German national legend Lothar Matthews said that he expected his country to make a huge impression in the European Football Cup (Euro 2020), which was postponed until next year due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic.
“I will not say that we are the favourite, and I think the French team is better equipped and England and the Netherlands have two good teams, but we do not need to hide behind any other team,” Matthaus, Matthews, crowned with the German national team in the World Cup, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA).
Matthaus added that the German national team includes a world-class goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, in addition to a group of young players who are making progress, adding that the team includes “Joshua Kimmich, Timo Werner and Kay Havertz, who are desirable by top clubs.”
“I have every confidence that we will again have a good generation of players,” he furthered. International soccer competitions were greatly affected by the Corona crisis, but Matthews is not concerned about the impact of the long-term lack of training and matches on the German national team. Referring to the expected resumption of international competitions through the European League matches next September, Matheus said, “The other teams do not have many matches either.”
