Liverpool Mayor calls for playing the “Merseyside Derby” at Everton

Liverpool, (ONA) - Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson confirmed that the Merseyside derby between Everton and its host Liverpool in the English Premier League football championship should be held at Goodison Park, as planned.

Liverpool, who tops the Premier League standings with a 25-point difference from its closest opponents, Manchester City, will visit Everton on June 21 in the first match of the two teams after the competition resumed its activities after stopping last March, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Liverpool may win the title which has been absent from its treasures for thirty years if they beat Everton, and Manchester City lost to its host Arsenal in their postponed meeting that will be held next Wednesday. This prospect led to suggestions that the match could be played in a neutral location, away from Goodison Park, amid fears that fans gather in large numbers outside the stadium and then violate the guidelines for social separation, which is one of the most important conditions for facing the corona outbreak.

This issue is scheduled to be discussed at the Liverpool City Council Safety Advisory Group meeting on Monday.

The mayor of Liverpool had previously expressed his opposition to the resumption of the season because of the danger posed by fans who may gather outside the stadiums, but things have changed now, and he feels that the derby match can be played safely.

“We are in a better position than we were four weeks ago, and we were able to express the importance of no one gathering outside or near the stadium,” Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson told The Athletic today.

“We have had the opportunity since then to speak to the fans, the clubs have done their part and have sent a message that the fans need to get away,” Anderson added.
