ICARDI signs a four-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain Paris
(ONA) Argentine Mauro Icardi on-loan from Inter Milan signed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain, which will keep him until 2024 with the French club, according to the announcement made today.
“Paris Saint-Germain are thrilled to announce the signing of Mauro Icardi on an enduring deal, following the striker’s mortgage from Inter Milan all over the 2019-2020 season,” the French Football League championship mentioned in a commentary.
This is the first major transfer deal in the European football world since it entered the era of the new coronavirus crisis.
The 27-year-old, moved to the French capital club in September 2019 on loan, after months of a tense relationship with the Lombard club, and decrease in his role in the squad during the reign of new coach Antonio Conte.
But the Argentine proved his presence in Saint-Germain, and scored 21 goals in 30 games in various competitions with the club, before the suspension of football matches in mid-March due to "Covid-19" and crowning the team champion of the league.
Due to the financial implications of the coronavirus, Saint-Germain reached an agreement with his Italian counterpart to buy Icardi for "less" than 60 million euros, instead of the 70 million required to activate the contracting option, according to French and Italian reports.
Since his arrival in the capital club, Icardi has scored nine goals in the French League and five in the Champions League, whose team reached its quarter-finals at the expense of Germany's Borussia Dortmund.
The Saint-Germain’s retention of Icardi is likely to put an end to the future of Uruguayan striker Edisonon Cavani in Paris, as his contract with the club expires on June 30.
Cavani, the club's historical goal scorer with 200 goals in 301 games in various competitions, according to the player's official website, was close to leaving Paris in January, but his age (33) had made it difficult for his agents to find a suitable team for him, according to press reports.
With losses estimated at more than 200 million euros after the end of the French League season due to Covid-19, a reduction in the total amount of salaries exceeding 300 million euros seems imperative.
In addition to Cavani, Saint-Germain is also likely to give up his 35-year-old Brazilian leader Thiago Silva, whose contract expires on June 30, like Belgium's Tomma Monnet and Levan Kurzawa.
