New York, (ONA) - The Sultanate affirmed its firm position on the necessity of adhering to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the provisions of international law based on respect for states’ sovereignty, non-interference in their internal affairs, the establishment of good neighbourly relations, cooperation, exchange of benefits, and the settlement of disputes by peaceful means.

The Sultanate called for the necessity of adherence to those noble principles and firm provisions that take into account the interest of all without exception and that would make the world more secure and stable within the framework of mutual trust and joint cooperation, and to establish a new phase of security and prosperity for all humankind.

This came in the Sultanate’s speech before the First Committee during the work of the seventy-fifth session of the United Nations General Assembly delivered by Counsellor Ahmed bin Dawood Al Zadjali, deputy representative of the Sultanate’s permanent delegation to the United Nations.

In his speech, Counselor Ahmed bin Dawood Al Zadjali affirmed the Sultanate’s support for the establishment of a world free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction and the importance of reaching the universality of the non-proliferation regime, calling on countries that have not joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to do so without delay and conditions and to submit all its nuclear installations to the comprehensive system of control supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He said that among the initiatives aimed at promoting security and stability are those related to the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, noting that the Sultanate welcomed the decision issued in 1995 by the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.

The deputy representative of the Sultanate’s permanent delegation to the United Nations added that the Sultanate calls on all states, in particular the depositary nuclear states to the Treaty, to actively and positively participate in translating the contents of the resolution into a tangible reality in a way that enhances mutual trust and coexistence between the countries and peoples of the region.

In his speech, he indicated that the Sultanate welcomed the holding of the first conference on establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, which was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York in November 2019 under the chairmanship of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, confirming its full support for holding the second session of the aforementioned conference in 2021, chaired by the State of Kuwait.

He explained that the Sultanate attaches great importance to cybersecurity and the protection of vital institutions and installations from cyber-attacks, and calls for more international cooperation and information exchange in this field, pointing to the position achieved by the Sultanate in the Global Cybersecurity Index, as it ranked 16th in the world within the index that includes 175 countries.

In his speech, Al-Zadjali said that the events the world went through demonstrated the close connection between the security of states, which necessitates us all to contribute positively to the formation of a world free of nuclear and mass-destruction weapons, a world of security and stability free from tensions, which requires political will and a comprehensive vision for the common collective security of states.
