New tropical system in Arabian Sea 1,600 km away from Oman

There are chances of varying rain and thunderstorms in some parts of the country due to a new tropical depression in the Arabian Sea near the Indian coast, Oman Meteorology said.

The depression is likely to intensify into a severe cyclone and cross the Western Indian coasts on June 3. “The latest analysis shows the tropical system is situated southeast of the Arabian Sea near the Indian west coast with the surface speed of 17 to 25 knots (30 – 45 km / h). It is situated 1,600 away from the coast of the Sultanate (Ras al-Hadd),” the statement said.

Initial indications show the depression moving north towards the Indo-Pakistani coast without any
direct effects on the Sultanate during the next three days. The latest maps of numerical forecasts indicate the potential to develop into a deep tropical depression.OmanObserver
