ONA — The Ministry of Information is set to launch the documentary film “Al Dakhtar Tomas,” which chronicles the biography of the American physician Dr. Wells Thoms, one of the most prominent figures associated with the history of healthcare services in the Sultanate of Oman.
The film combines historical narration with re-enacted dramatic scenes, rare archival materials, and live shooting in the Sultanate of Oman and the United States of America, within a contemporary cinematic treatment.
The work traces the early life journey of Dr. Wells Thoms (locally known in the Sultanate of Oman as “Al Dakhtar Tomas”), from his childhood and his early exposure to the suffering of patients with leprosy and other infectious diseases in the Sultanate of Oman, to his lifelong dedication to medical and humanitarian work in the Sultanate of Oman.
The film also highlights key marks in his life, including the development of Al Rahma Hospital, the launch of specialized initiatives for the treatment of infectious diseases and leprosy, his medical outreach trips across various wilayats, and his close relationship with the Omani community.
The documentary is based on testimonies and interviews with researchers, academics, and figures connected to healthcare services in the Sultanate of Oman, in addition to special interviews with members of the doctor’s family and academics in the United States.
Filming locations included the states of Florida, Kansas, and Michigan, where aspects of his scientific and family life were documented. Cinematic color grading and sound mixing were carried out in specialized studios in London.
The film “Al Dakhtar Tomas” aims to shed light on a figure who left a significant impact on Omani memory, through a documentary work that blends history, drama, and human dimension, and documents an important aspect of the development of the healthcare sector in the Sultanate of Oman.
