International days offer vital opportunities to educate the public on shared global issues, raise awareness, disseminate knowledge, and mobilise collective political will and resources to tackle pressing challenges. They also serve as a platform to celebrate and reaffirm human achievements.
Since the United Nations General Assembly declared 24 January as the International Day of Education during its 73rd session in 2018, the Sultanate of Oman has actively participated in this global event, reaffirming its steadfast commitment to advancing the education sector. Likewise, on 7 April each year, Oman joins the international community in marking World Health Day, emphasising the importance of health as a cornerstone of individual well-being and social development. The Sultanate of Oman participates actively in this global observance as part of its ongoing efforts to build a comprehensive and sustainable healthcare system that addresses both physical and mental health. Oman’s participation reflects its policies to enhance public awareness, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen the health sector’s capacity to meet current and future challenges.
On 11 February each year, the Sultanate of Oman joins the international community in celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, designated by the United Nations General Assembly on 22 December 2015 in recognition of the pivotal role of women and girls in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The observance underscores the importance of empowering women in science and harnessing their potential across diverse scientific disciplines.
Each year, on 5 June, the world celebrates World Environment Day, a global event dedicated to raising environmental awareness and encouraging collective action to protect the planet. The Sultanate of Oman accords this day special significance as an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to environmental protection and the conservation of natural resources, consistent with its sustainable development objectives and Oman Vision 2040. Oman observes this occasion through awareness campaigns and community initiatives addressing urgent environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, waste management, and the sustainable use of resources.
Oman also commemorates World Water Day annually on 22 March, a date internationally recognised since 1993. The observance underscores the critical importance of freshwater, raises awareness of the global water crisis, and reaffirms that water is a vital resource for environmental sustainability and human survival.
Motivated by its deep pride in the Arabic language—the language of the Holy Qur’an and a cornerstone of cultural and national identity—the Ministry of Education, through the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, celebrates Arabic Language Day each year on 18 December. This day was designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to honour the historical and cultural importance of Arabic as one of the official languages of the United Nations.
On 10 December each year, the world observes Human Rights Day, marking the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and reaffirming the principles of dignity, freedom, and justice.
The Sultanate of Oman actively commemorates this occasion as part of its firm commitment to human rights and their integration into national legislation and practice. Oman’s observance highlights its balanced approach to safeguarding human dignity, equality, equal opportunity, and the promotion of responsible freedoms within a framework of rights and obligations.
To foster a culture of tsunami risk awareness, enhance community preparedness, and reduce economic losses from natural disasters, 5 November has been designated as World Tsunami Awareness Day by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) in cooperation with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). The Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science encourages relevant authorities and stakeholders across the Sultanate of Oman to participate in this global observance.
Oman also joins the international community in celebrating World Heritage Day on 18 April each year. The day was established in 1972 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) under the auspices of UNESCO, in response to global calls for the preservation of humanity’s cultural heritage. The occasion highlights the economic, social, and civilisational significance of heritage, and the Sultanate of Oman has successfully inscribed several cultural and archaeological sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
