Comprehensive Efforts to Strengthen Road Safety

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) continues its efforts to strengthen road safety through a comprehensive set of measures, including awareness programmes, professional training, and the regular updating of systems and legislation to align with current circumstances. It also leverages modern technologies to implement global best practices that ensure the safety of all road users.

Recognising the importance of promoting traffic awareness to build an informed and responsible society, the ROP has made road safety one of its top national priorities. It has implemented a series of awareness programmes targeting all segments of society and organised road safety exhibitions across the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. These exhibitions enable members of the public to engage directly with police officers and learn about the ongoing efforts in this field.

The ROP also participated in the 37th Gulf Traffic Week celebrations for the GCC countries in 2025, held under the slogan “Driving Without a Phone”, through interactive exhibitions featuring a range of activities and events.

These exhibitions serve as an ideal platform for communicating key safety messages, raising public awareness, and discouraging unsafe driving behaviour. They remind road users of the importance of adhering to traffic laws and regulations, observing proper road etiquette, and helping to prevent avoidable accidents, protect lives and property, and ensure the safety of all.

Traffic Safety Institutes

The Traffic Safety Institutes, located across 11 governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, support the ROP’s mission by training and qualifying police officers and road users alike. They offer specialised programmes, including workshops and awareness lectures, thereby enhancing traffic culture and awareness throughout society. The institutes also support national initiatives dedicated to road safety.

The Road Safety Institute has also launched the “Traffic School for Children” initiative—a miniature traffic city that replicates real-life conditions. Its purpose is to instil respect for traffic rules and to prepare a generation that values adherence to traffic laws and road safety standards. This initiative provides educational programmes for school students in collaboration with educational institutions.

Joint Efforts and Coordination

The Royal Oman Police, through its Traffic Safety Institutes and in coordination with the Ministry of Education and its General Directorates across the governorates, organises awareness programmes and lectures targeting school bus drivers and students. These initiatives include both theoretical and practical components focused on promoting safe driving behaviour, reducing traffic risks, and ensuring the safety of both drivers and students.

Additionally, the Directorate General of Traffic works to ensure the smooth and secure movement of school buses, enabling students to travel to and from school safely and efficiently.

The Ministry of Education has also implemented the international “VIA” Road Safety Programme in 33 schools across the governorates. Targeting students aged between 10 and 18, the programme raises awareness of risky behaviours and equips them with practical strategies for applying safety measures within the school environment.

Community Partnership

Community partnership forms a cornerstone of successful road safety initiatives. Public awareness and citizen participation are essential to creating safe road environments. Citizens and residents play a vital role by complying with traffic laws, participating in awareness campaigns, and sharing responsibility with the police in promoting a culture of traffic awareness.

To unify national efforts in this field, the Sultanate of Oman established the National Road Safety Committee under Royal Decree No. 64/1997. Chaired by His Excellency the Lieutenant General, Inspector-General of Police and Customs, and comprising distinguished members and experts, the committee continuously reviews the prevailing situation and develops national strategies and plans aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing traffic accidents and their consequences.
