Dhofar Governorate is witnessing promising development achievements that form part of the continued government efforts within the renewed Omani renaissance to realise sustainable development. These efforts are positioning the governorate as a growing destination that seeks to enhance services and projects while harnessing its geographical advantages to become an active hub contributing to the diversification of the national economy and a promising destination for innovation and sustainability in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. In support of these development efforts, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology is strengthening infrastructure in Dhofar Governorate through the implementation, maintenance and development of the local road network across the various wilayats of the governorate. These projects extend over more than 300 kilometres, with a total cost exceeding 36 million Omani rials.

Alongside infrastructure development, the economic and investment sector in the governorate continues to expand. Salalah Port stands as a leading global hub for shipping and logistics services and one of the fastest-growing ports in the region, linking East and West. Work is also progressing on several major strategic projects, including the expansion of Raysut Industrial City across an area of 5 million square metres and the establishment of Thumrait Industrial City at a cost of 12 million Omani rials. Efforts are also underway to expand logistics zones and strengthen connectivity between Salalah Port, the Free Zone, the airport and border crossings, alongside the implementation of social responsibility programmes aimed at empowering youth and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.

In parallel with economic expansion, Dhofar Governorate is placing growing emphasis on the sectors of environment, renewable energy and the green economy. Several pioneering projects are being implemented in the fields of wind energy, green hydrogen and solar power, most notably the Dhofar 1 and Dhofar 2 wind power plants and the Sadah Wind Power Plant, in addition to the Green Ammonia Plant and green hydrogen projects implemented in cooperation with Hydrom.

At the same time, the education and health sectors in the governorate continue to receive significant attention in order to keep pace with population growth. Recent developments include the inauguration of advanced laboratories at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Salalah, along with several new schools and specialised research laboratories that contribute to developing students’ skills and strengthening the research ecosystem. In the health sector, a number of vital projects are currently underway to expand medical services, including the new Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah, the expansion of existing hospitals such as Taqah Hospital, Mirbat Hospital and Muqshin Hospital, the upgrading of Thumrait Health Centre to a local hospital, and the establishment of a new health centre in Madhi in the Wilayat of Thumrait.

Complementing these efforts, Dhofar Governorate is implementing a package of strategic projects in the sectors of water, electricity and wastewater. These projects include completed works as well as others currently under implementation, with a total cost exceeding 137 million Omani rials, as part of broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure, improve service quality and enhance protection against flood risks.

In support of food security, the agriculture, fisheries and water resources sector is also witnessing notable progress as a result of government efforts to advance economic diversification. Among the key initiatives are the cultivation and development of 50,000 coconut seedlings and the processing of their products, the establishment of a gene bank for collecting and evaluating varieties of bananas and papayas, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding to cultivate several crop varieties in the Najd region. Efforts are also ongoing to ensure the sustainability of marine life through a range of livestock, agricultural and fisheries production projects.

Building on these development efforts, the tourism sector in Dhofar Governorate represents a key pillar of economic diversification in the Sultanate of Oman. The sector continues to receive growing attention due to the governorate’s historical landmarks, archaeological heritage and unique natural attractions, particularly during the Khareef season. To support tourism services, several distinctive tourism projects are currently underway, including the establishment of an integrated tourism complex in the Janouf area of the Wilayat of Salalah with an investment value of approximately 80 million Omani rials, as well as the Rathath Boulevard project in Ittin Plain, the Uptown recreational destination in Ittin Plain, the Aghbir recreational site, and the scenic viewpoints of Al Damar, Darbat and Hamrir, all aimed at enhancing tourism and hospitality in the governorate.
