Over the past decades of its Renaissance journey, the Sultanate of Oman has placed significant importance on conserving the environment and its vital natural resources. This is evident in its efforts to safeguard ecosystems and biodiversity, considered strategic assets that support comprehensive sustainable development plans. The Sultanate of Oman has worked to strengthen its legislative, regulatory, and institutional frameworks to ensure the responsible use of natural resources, the protection of terrestrial and marine wildlife, and the control of pollution in all its forms and sources. These efforts reflect a firm belief that environmental protection is a collective responsibility that transcends national borders.
The environment is a key priority in the Sultanate of Oman’s social and economic development agenda. Environmental preservation helps reduce the economic costs associated with resource loss, degradation, or waste. Using natural resources optimally and sustainably is essential to supporting the national economy, ensuring its continuity, and boosting its resilience and growth. Furthermore, protecting biodiversity and natural habitats contributes to the development of the tourism sector, especially through the promotion and expansion of eco-tourism activities.
Environmental and natural resource priorities fall under the “Sustainable Environment” pillar of Oman Vision 2040, forming a foundational platform for achieving the goals of the environmental sector. This pillar is closely linked to environmental well-being through its focus on the sustainable use of natural wealth, the transition to a green economy, the diversification of energy sources, especially wind and solar power, achieving food and water security, and promoting environmental awareness that guides society toward the responsible use of natural resources and the protection of all elements of the ecosystem.
The Environment Authority is tasked with conserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of its resources. It implements environmental policies and oversees the enforcement of legislation aimed at protecting natural resources and biodiversity. The Authority strives to achieve integrated environmental sustainability through various efforts, including protecting wildlife and biodiversity, controlling environmental pollution in all its forms, and monitoring industrial and commercial activities to ensure compliance with environmental standards. It also promotes environmental awareness across all segments of society, encourages eco-friendly behavior, and develops sustainable development plans that strike a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation. Additionally, the Authority supports the transition to a green economy, reduces dependence on traditional energy sources, and monitors and assesses environmental conditions through research and studies on the impact of human activities, with the goal of taking appropriate actions to preserve environmental quality.
As part of its commitment to environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources, the Sultanate of Oman has designated January 8 each year as Oman Environment Day. Internationally, the Sultanate of Oman continues to be an active and influential member of the global environmental protection community through its participation in numerous environmental organizations and international agreements with other nations.
The Sultanate of Oman has also sought to enhance its presence in international and regional environmental forums through participation in major global conferences. This commitment was notably affirmed in 1989 with the launch of the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation. This was the first Arab prize to be awarded on a global scale and reflects the Sultanate’s contribution to raising global environmental awareness, fostering international partnerships in ecosystem preservation, and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals aimed at improving the well-being and prosperity of people worldwide.
The Sultanate of Oman is blessed with unique biodiversity, featuring plains, mountains, deserts, and seas, which together support a wide variety of natural habitats across its governorates. This ecological richness is reflected in the increasing number of recorded wildlife species, including many types of birds, animals, sea turtles, marine mammals, terrestrial and marine reptiles, and rare species of trees and wild herbs. The Environment Authority has translated this biodiversity into numerous conservation projects and initiatives to protect, sustain, and responsibly manage the Sultanate’s natural resources.
Biodiversity centers across Oman’s governorates have been actively implementing initiatives for the rescue, rehabilitation, and breeding of wildlife species using modern scientific methods and the accumulated expertise of Omani environmental specialists. These initiatives include providing medical care for animals, rehabilitating them, and releasing them into their natural habitats, as well as protecting and breeding endangered species and caring for confiscated wild animals and birds.
The Sultanate of Oman’s wealth of natural resources—animal, marine, and plant—has given rise to a wide range of nature-based economic activities. Its biodiversity has also contributed to the country’s eco-tourism potential, as Oman is home to many sites of stunning natural beauty and rich wildlife. These sites attract nature enthusiasts, adventurers, and wildlife watchers, and include nature reserves, coastlines, lagoons, islands, and caves.
